On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Getting educated

I've been away from my blog for a few days, but I have a good reason! Yesterday I attended a professional conference to earn some continuing education units -- in Honolulu! Our son and daughter-in-law live here so it was a triple feature -- visiting them, getting in some R&R and attending the conference. I drew my way through the latter.

I can't identify these plants but they sure are cute! They seem to come in white, pink and deep red. Maybe there are other colors, but that's what I've seen so far.

I spent a lot of my down time sitting under this umbrella tree. In fact, that's where I am right now, writing to you!

I wish I could grow hibiscus at home. I asked at a nursery after our last trip here, but the grower was certain it was too cold in northern California. For sure, this year that would have been true because we had several freezing nights, not our typical winter.

But let's just say the hibiscus is one of my favorite bushes anyway.

  2. You might try growing hibiscus indoors. My mother has several thriving plants in her home and she lives in northern NJ. They need a lot of sun so the rooms in which she grows them have a lot of windows. And I believe one particularly large one is moved outside when the weather becomes warmer.

You can certainly try. Perhaps ask around your neighborhood. For all you know there's a closet hibiscus grower who can give you all sorts of tips to help your plants flourish!

  3. I need to remember to bring a sketchbook when attending meetings. What a great way to practice drawing people (I need a lot of practice with that). But if I had a meeting in Hawaii, it would be hard to stay indoors to attend it! Sounds like you had a great trip.

  4. Wonderful sketchbook pages and, WOW!, you're in Hawaii! I almost lost my hibiscus this year. We got down to 17 degrees one night, and all winter it was cold for us (Texas). I thought it was gone for good, but then a couple of weeks ago I noticed leaves starting to pop up. It will take a while to get as large as it was, but it's still there!

  7. Hi Ginny! Welcome back. I'm determined to have some hibiscus of my own.

Satia -- Thanks for the hint. If your mom can have hibiscus in New Jersey, surely I can have some in northern California. I'll try.

Hi AIFTM -- Drawing in church, conferences, classes, etc. is the only way I can stay focused!

Raena -- 17 degrees? Surely I can be successful here, it has NEVER gotten that cold.

Hi SG - Thank you for stopping by!

Nancy - Thank you for checking in so regularly-- It was a great place to be!
