On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Getting on board

Steve and I went to a movie this evening to see "Lincoln."  We don't do nearly enough things outside of our home - official homebodies we are - but this one was worth it.  We are both interested in American history - he knows much more than I do - and it was quite a treat to see something worthy.  Were it a book it would have been a page-turner. He checked his watch every hour so I could have a dose of liquid morphine, but that's what made the difference between staying home and going out.

We plan to be in the congregation tomorrow morning, but have no other plans. I'm determined to be a participant of the parish during 2013, but it will be all I can do just to attend.

It's all I can do to manage the little things.  I'd like to pick up on more regular reading, something I truly enjoy, but gets set aside for no good reason.  And drawing, when did I last draw?

The surgeon predicted a slow recovery.  Let's just say she got that one right!

  1. Barbara, My Dad always told me that if I took care of the little things, the big things would take care of themselves. You will be reaching your goals before you know it, even if it seems slow on a day to day basis -- I see your positive outlook lurking between the lines !!! Keeping you in my prayers. Hugs, Ginny

I agree with Ginny above. I can sense the old Barbara coming back. Thank goodness. I wanted to recommend a book that will capture your mind and occupy your brain for days thinking of children, foster care and flowers. I know a strange combination. The story is also located in San Francisco and north of the Golden Gate. SOund familiar? The book is The Language of Flowers. I highly recommend it to you. We loved Lincoln too. I hope you have read Team of Rivals. Quite a task to read, but so worth it. My prayers are with you as you recover and get back on your feet. Annie
