On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

A new day

I am finally going home in the morning, Saturday, after 34 days in the hospital.  The last time I was hospitalized was in 1968 after giving birth.  In other words, I don't do this often, but when I do I stay long enough to make it worth my while.

Steve has been making some changes at home so it will be easier for me to get around.  I've seen photos of what he's done, but nothing is the same as seeing the differences in person.  I am so excited about leaving, this has been a very long haul.

We're also making some concerted decisions about what we can do differently to help me live longer.  There's no guarantee in that, of course, but we plan to work together in dietary and other lifestyle changes to give me my best shot.  After a couple more weeks of healing from all three surgeries, I will also return to chemotherapy.  Hopefully there will be enough options to keep me going for quite a long time, that is  my hope, however unrealistic.  I feel well right now, not at all ready to give it up.

I'm also looking forward to being reunited with Brix.  Steve says he lies by the living room door in wait for me (sigh).  He's a warm, cuddly labrador and I miss him tremendously.  Demi has been visiting regularly, but Brix isn't as well behaved and Steve hasn't risked bringing him.  Hospital policy, however, does allow for pets as long as they are kept in the hospital room.  Demi, as a service dog, is allowed in the hallways.

And so it goes.  A new life, a new day.  I simply cannot wait!
