On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

How we get vitamin C

Summer has arrived, but I understand that later in the week it will be cooler.  Now that I'm feeling so much better (and I'm walking a mile every day), my to-do list is growing again.  So much fell apart in the last six months, not just me, and I need to concentrate on getting things done.

But, it's also strawberry season here in Sonoma County and most of the community stops for that. ( I've never seen the strawberry fields sprayed so I think they're safe, or else I'm doomed.) There are stands that we all know about, we wait patiently in line - sometimes we wait while the berries are being picked for us - and then luxuriate in strawberry shortcake, strawberries and cream, strawberry smoothies and, you know, just plain strawberries.  The season typically begins sometime in April - it was late this year - and ends in November.  The winter bazaars often sell strawberry jams which keep us in toast until April comes around again.

Strawberries are a big deal here, can you tell?

  1. I hate to be the one to say it but strawberries have some of the most chemicals of all the fruits. Surely someone has some organic ones you get. I love strawberries and don't bother with organic which can be more expensive than the others but I realize I can only do that as a treat at this time a year due to the pesticides. I like the strawberries best plain and at room temp. Strawberry waffles are good too.

  2. But wouldn't they use sprays? I've been watching for 17 years and never see spraying. The vineyards are sprayed - guys in white hazmat suits are out there every now and then. I think the strawberries at the stands are safer than the non-organic berries in the stores. That's my hope, anyway!
