On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Happier than I have a right to be

Today was absolutely wonderful! First, there was the weather. After unrelenting rain - remember all that? - we're having this spate of upper 60s, almost 70º F. temperatures with bright sunshine and blue skies. Everything smells fresh and clean. Wild calendula and mustard is growing everywhere and is stunning against the emerald green grass (from all that rain).

Second, I was the docent on duty at the Petaluma Adobe. This was the "factory" and a mainstay of the hide and tallow trade in northern California (when it was still Mexico)... 1830-ish. (Statehood didn't come until 1850.)

I cannot tell you how many times I was the docent and nobody showed up, or the few who did preferred to self-direct. But today I was the nonstop tour guide with newcomers joining along the way. Everyone was so upbeat and interested with great questions and comments. My stint was two hours, but I stayed 30 minutes more to complete a tour I'd started - and was absolutely cotton-mouthed by the time I finally stopped talking.

In the evening I read my e-mails and learned that I was just approved for a startup project that I really wanted and will be facilitating a new therapy group for adults - combining art and talk therapies. I've wanted this for a long time and finally it will happen just as soon as I get my promotional materials together.

Life is good, isn't it, when it all starts coming together!

  1. great sketched on the veggies - why is their a small paintbrush in the corner? Isn't it nice when others share your interest and are genuinely happy that you took time to help them? It makes it all worthwhile!

  2. Sounds like EXCELLENT reasons to be happy! Congratulations!

  3. Thank you so much, Raena!

  4. PAK ART -- The sketchbook I was using has tiny watercolor object paintings on the bottom right corners of the right hand pages. Sometimes they make sense with what I draw, but this time they obviously did not!
