On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Kindle dreams

Number One grandson turned 14 this week. He's the most avid, voracious reader I know so what could I possibly give him that would bring a Wow! response but a Kindle. It worked. It was, as kids say these days, the bomb. As I would say, he was stoked. There was a gift card to go with it so he could start loading it with his choices, but I reminded him that the classics are free. As much as he reads, he hasn't yet sunk into Tom Sawyer, Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island and others that have passed the judgement of time.

I've been more hesitant for myself. I hinted one year, asked for it another -- and then changed my mind -- but this year my private Santa is giving me one. I have thousands, literally thousands, of unread books here at home. If I lived out the rest of my life on house arrest I could still read several books each week, and that doesn't even count the re-reading, which I enjoy even more.

So, why do I want a Kindle? That's part of the reason right there. There are so many books in this house that I need to clear some out, not bring more in. I plan to save my new Kindle for the classics (like my grandson, largely unread, but at least he can plead that he hasn't been on this earth and reading for very long) and best sellers, the ones I'd have to wait all year for in the library (or buy, but there's no room, remember?) My hope is that with the thrill of new technology -- I'm a sucker for bells and whistles -- will increase my interest in reading and that I'll fly through more volumes in 2011.

In the meantime, what will I do with the thousands I already own?

  1. I started to laugh at the first sentence of your post... for the reason that my thirteen year old just came back from Chapters with EIGHT books! He and I just looked at the KOBO Reader from Chapters/Indigo yesterday and we both salivated at the thought of getting one each. I personally would read all the classics too but I think Ben would be into reading them too! We both read a book called "Leonardo's Shadow" by Christopher Grey which your grandson might like too... it's a book about Leonardo Da Vinci's servant and I was rather entertained by it as well. Just a suggestion if he hasn't read it.
Thanks for sharing your gift to your grandson. I have tons and tons of books at home too.
    Hugs and blessings to you.

  4. I asked for one when they came out and then again last year. Now that I see the I-pad, I'd rather have that because it seems you get the pictures from the book included which you don't with the kindle(from what I understand) so this year my husband has hinted pretty plainly that I'll be getting the kindle.

Like you, I don't want more books to clutter things up. I just took about 500 to the library and have at least 50 to give to my daughter. I still have too many but it's much more manageable. So, I will probably enjoy the kindle except for craft books where you really need pictures!
