On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Heroine of my own story

Demi hunkered down under the pew this morning so it was a bit of a stretch to draw her without being noticed. Fortunately, I was in the very last pew myself, so no one could tell what I was doing.

Today was Steve's last Sunday helping out at Holy Trinity Church in Ukiah, California. He's been there off and on for five years and I've been accompanying him since the first of this year. We'll miss the drives through Wine Country, the warm and welcoming congregation and hope to see folks again from time to time.

I gave Steve a small electric outdoor grill for Father's Day. It was the most self-serving gift I've ever given him -- but now he can grill steaks and other morsels. He's already tried it out -- it arrived a couple days ago and I couldn't wait -- and I know life has now taken a new culinary turn. This will be awesome.

But for this evening he chose a favorite Mexican restaurant, one we can walk to. My personal goal has been to walk 30 miles in June -- that's only a mile a day -- and, since I'm a bit ahead of schedule, I know I can do this. Daily walking has become My New Thing and I hope to maintain it during the cold weather as well. I'm losing weight, feel better and am pleased at all the errands I can run without jumping into the car.

  1. Excellent sketch! I love to walk. When I still lived in Boise I walked five miles almost everyday. And everything was within walking distance it seemed! Now I'm in Texas, humidity at 95% as I type this. There is nothing close enough to walk to. I hate to be outside in summer here. And I miss my walks! Sorry for complaining, I just know how beautiful the weather can be there this time of year!

  2. Have fun with the grill, Barbara, and enjoy the walking! I love the idea of 30 miles in a month: I think I'll have to try that myself....

  3. You are going to reach your goal of losing weight. You are inspiring me! Like your dog.

  4. Ouch! That would be hard if I couldn't walk for errands and fun. I guess you need a few places where you can drive, park and set off from there!

  5. Rebecca -- If you do try for the mile a day, I recommend http://mileaday.com as a great site to accurately measure the distance - if that's important to you. (It is to me, because otherwise I cheat!)
