On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

My next good read

I just finished reading this amazing memoir, BROTHER, I'M DYING, by Edwidge Danicat. The author was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and was separated from her parents when she was just two years old. She emigrated to the United States when she was 12.

While following Danicat's personal and family history we also follow the tumultuous political history of her birth country. Her loyalties flash back and forth to the two men who care for her -- her uncle who raised her and her birth father -- as well as her aunt, siblings and birth mother. This is an awesome read and the timing is perfect. I can only imagine what the author is feeling in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

  1. I heard about this book - I've got to read it. (And she's a Miami resident too, I think - yeah!)
