On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Favorites of mine

I have a particular affection for turtles, especially land turtles. Growing up in southern Illinois, I used to watch them mysteriously appear and slowly make their way across the back yard where I was playing. Those were box turtles.

There aren't as many now although I do recall, about ten years ago, being stunned by the number of snapping turtles along the highway in southern Missouri. Not recognizing them for what they were, I attempted to relocate one %&#@ snapper off the road, ungrateful creature! I'm lucky I have all my fingers. Steve intervened.

Since then it has become a family story. How large was this turtle? When I tell the story I hold my hands about 10 inches apart. When Steve tells it the turtle is about a yard wide -- probably what it felt like with all it's ferocity.

This painting, however, is of a very mild and gentle sea turtle, a completely different sort.

  4. What a sweet painting! Oh, those snappers are viscious! They can definitely take off a finger if given half a chance. nancy

I love turtles, too, and this is a great sketch. Love your story. Last year we had a huge snapper come into our yard. He looked like a miniature brontosaurus lumbering across the yard. But, he was very kind to stay very still and let me photograph him. I made sure to stay a respectful distance away. ;)
