On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

My confusing life

I was back in the chemotherapy suite today.  I asked the doctor for a "hall pass" so I could visit my friends and he said as long as I was medically stable I had that right. Steve and Demi were with me so there I was, in my robe and jammies, walking through the medical campus, but I got to chat and say hello.  It was also the first breath of real fresh outdoor air I've breathed in 15 days.

I got back in time to meet with another visitor who had taken the time to come to the hospital to visit me.

My energy level was a bit higher now that my hemoglobin was up from 7.1 yesterday to 7.9 today.  Normal is above 11, so clearly I have a way to go.  I don't know if I will receive another transfusion or not.  I am clearly anemic.

There are parts of the new food plan that I like.  Dinner tonight included pot roast and mashed potatoes with gravy.  The serving size was larger than I could manage, but it definitely was tasty. In fact, there is almost no meat that I can't eat - meat doesn't contain fiber unless it's a cheap deli cut with gristle and ground up "stuff" mixed in. Everything else - including bacon and sausage - is allowed.

Carrots are apparently one of the safest vegetables for me.  I see them on almost all the lunch and dinner  trays, usually mixed in with a second vegetable.

I have several food lists given to me by the dieticians. Most have two columns:  Foods to Enjoy, Foods to Avoid.  That makes it easy to scan alphabetically and immediately know if a particularly item would be helpful or not.

Except for honey.  It's on the "Enjoy" list. Trace your finger one inch to the right, to the "Avoid" list.  Honey.

  1. At least you still have your sense of humor! That made me laugh about the honey on both lists - better recheck that with the doctor!
