On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Why I loathe the DMV

Most Californians complain about the Department of Motor Vehicles.  Lines are long, the new furlough days have made it worse and you basically have to take a day off from work to transact business.

But I have a personal grudge.  The last time the DMV said I had to have a new photo in order to renew my license was about nine years ago.  I was in the midst of chemotherapy that time too and bald as an egg in a nest.

I stood in front of the camera.  "Remove your hat," he said.  What choice did I have?  For nine #$%^#@ years I've been walking around with the ugliest license photo in California history.

Take last week, for example.  I needed to show my ID to someone.  "No, that's your husband, I need to see yours," says the someone.  I gave her my most withering look.  I can wither when I have to.  "Oh, sorry," she says when she sees my name is stamped on the license.

Well, if anyone asks for my license during the next few months, my photo will match my head.  Grrrrrr.

Okay it's a bit like "pull up your pants". Stuff we could live without. Authoritarian bs. Go back to the dmv, call, write, send an email, and request a new photo. Give yourself the gift of asking for something that will make you feel better. And if you don't have the energy to do it right now, you can do it sometime later. This is Julie Berry from San Diego. Heaven only knows what will happen when I try to post this comment :)
