Really, the Cold War?
Along the way I said something about eating supper. I heard these little chuckles. "What did I do?"
"Supper," they informed me, is no more. It went out with the Cold War (I was secretly pleased that one of these high security delinquents had apparently heard of that one.) The correct terminology is "dinner."
Okay, Readers, is this true? Was I really the dinosaur in the room? Is this a northern California thing or do the rest of you, all over the nation, now eat dinner?
They say you can teach an old dog new tricks so this is a test case in the making. Supper or dinner?
Supper is an evening meal here in SC ... dinner happens usually after church on Sunday afternoon, time depending on how long the preaching lasts... the noon meal the rest of the week is called lunch.

ReplyDeleteMy childhood family always ate dinner. My husband grew up with Sunday suppers as they had a full dinner for lunch that day. In Minnesota I found out lunch meant snack and could be had anytime (even with breakfast food which is what they call cereal). I figure if you have a full meal at lunchtime then you might have a lighter meal later which I would then call a supper but in general I have always used dinner (but lunch for me was usually a cold meal or leftovers too). I don't know too many people who ever say supper anymore though, to be honest.
