On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Serving however we can

It's tempting to say I was not affected by 9/11 because I was in California - not NYC, DC or PA - and because I didn't know anyone who was killed. But that would be a lie. 9/11 was a community trauma and, if we were alive and old enough to understand the events as they unfolded, we were all affected.

We were in Lakeport, California this morning and attended a 9/11-themed church service there.  Because assistance and search dogs were also killed that day in 2001, they were especially welcomed to attend the service today.  Demi was there, of course, as were three puppies in training from Guide Dogs to the Blind.  Imagine, four dogs in church and not a peep, uh, bark, out of any of them, ever.

We each give honor in our own way.

  1. Don't forget the rescue dogs that helped find survivors and sadly the bodies of the victims. I'm told that rescue dogs get depressed when they don't find live people, so that trainers will hide so the dogs can find a live person... giving the dog hope to look further. I too knew no one that was killed but was deeply affected by that day.

  3. I didn't know anyone neither.
But my heart was broken for all the families that went thru it.
    It was devastating.
Sunday I watched it on TV for hours and cried so many time.
The little kids are the ones who really pulled at my heart
