Open for surprise
The recreational art program in Juvenile Hall continues to be my favorite hour of the week. The boys are immensely appreciative and enjoy the quiet time to draw with contraband materials away from the din of the unit.
The only part that surprises me is that they enjoy - often say something nice - the classical music I play for them as a background. Raised on rock 'n roll and rap, I never anticipate that the melodic orchestral pieces by the masters will add to their enjoyment of the time, but it does. My motivation is simply to bring in something they would never have been exposed to, an accurate guess. I don't say anything about the music, but they frequently do and it's always positive.

My Dad used to play classical music constantly and it was very loud if I went out and had a late night then disturbed them in the morning. I now love classical and think you are giving these kids a fabulous present that will last forever.
ReplyDeleteThat is my hope! Thank you, Jill.
