The rising cost of eggs
I can't get enough of this great weather we're having! I just want to open all the doors and windows (did that yesterday), walk and walk and walk (will do that today). The air is clean from all the rain - scrubbed air! - and smells fresh and springlike.
It's time to check out the newest seed catalogs and make plans for the next best ever garden. My problem is that we let the chickens free-range for about 20 minutes before sundown each evening and they eat every sprig of life they can locate. They are insatiable -- leaves, gone; grasses, gone; weeds, gone; winter flowers, gone. They eat as though they've not been fed (they have), but fresh greenery is dessert gone wild and they know when something's good.
This year's planting is going to take some thought. Everything will need to be contained and fenced. Oh dear, what have I gotten myself into? They were so adorably cute when they were three days old!

Lovely sketch! I'm surprised about the chickens though. I thought a lot of the organic farmers used chickens to keep the insects out of their gardens!? How do they keep them from eating the plants instead?
ReplyDeleteI don't know, Raena. Yes, chickens love fresh bugs, but they would have to be fenced out of the plants because they like those just as much!
