On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Rocks Two

I wonder how many pages of rocks I'll have to draw before I can get it right. In my watercolor class today, while everyone else was painting glorious compositions, I demoted myself to continue the basics I began yesterday and struggled along with water soluble graphite. I made a little still life of river rocks, all quite small, and set it in front of me where the shadows cast dark ovals.

While that's going on in one part of my life, another part is moving toward Thanksgiving Day, now just a little more than a week away. Thanksgiving is the closest we Americans have of a national religious holiday. We can all be grateful, the day transcends differences of all kinds. There's a quietness to the day even when celebrated with large groups of family and friends or community dinners. It might, in fact, be my favorite holiday, definitely one to look forward to..

  2. These are just great. Although rocks are lowly critters, learning how to draw them will help you down the line with all textures, shadows and shapes. It's a great exercise and one I can say I never have conquered. But only because I didn't like how all my rocks came out!! LOL!! Of course I always tried to draw them with ink and I think I should go back to this and try them in pencil. then I can at least erase!!! Keep at it. These are lovely.

  4. I think your rocks are great. I think coming up with something realistic in black and white is much more difficult than doing a piece in color.

I have a lot of work to do to get ready for Thanksgiving. My kids are coming home and that means several days of food and activities for all ages. I'll be tired by the time they leave but happy they came.

I think your rocks are great, and I second what Revelle said. It's a difficult exercise, for sure, but well worth the time and energy. You're doing really well.

  8. Thank you so much for all your comments. I'll probably keep practicing because rocks seem to hold everything I still need to learn -- drawing the basic contour, texture, rounding the shape, form and cast shadows. As Revelle said, rocks are lowly, but useful to work on.
