On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Demi the Library Dog

One of my favorite activities is going to the public library on Monday afternoons and having the kids take turns reading to Demi. Sometimes Demi gets tired and falls asleep, but then I ask the kids questions like, "Did you ever fall asleep when someone was reading to you? Look at Demi, she liked your story so much she got warm and cozy and fell asleep!"

There are several regulars in the Read-to-A-Dog program. They sometimes bring her drawings they made of her, choose books with dogs in the story or storybook dogs that remind them of her. Demi takes it all in while gazing at the pages. If the kids are particularly good I show them how Demi can pounce on the handicap automatic door opener. The door swings open and their little jaws drop!
