On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Rocket's first portrait

When you're the doting mother of six backyard pullets you have to paint their portraits, right? Here is Rocket, my first born, first named, highest in the pecking order. She's a barred Plymouth Rock, the one who flies from the coop, gets first pick of kitchen scraps and leads the flock into the coop when she determines it's bedtime. Rocket is amazing. This evening I caught her sitting in a baby fig tree just three feet from the top of the wooden fence that runs along the back of our property. So now I have a new concern, what if she flies over the fence? Another fix-it project for tomorrow....

  1. I really enjoy your chickens. I would love to have some, but the hubby says NO! I guess he feels 2 dogs, 1 cat, a bunny, 2 horses are enough. So, I live vicariously through your girls. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful painting.

  8. She is lovely, can you clip chicken's wings? I have the vet clip our Macaws wings but we still have to be careful with him outdoors, their wings are so large that in a good breeze they can fly even without flight feathers. So chickens is where the phrase 'pecking order' came from that's a DUH moment for me.

  9. I work with Prismacolor pencils, too. Love 'em! Our house is filled with 3 cats, one dog that is ours, and we have a foster dog. We work with a no kill dog rescue in our area. I have a friend who has a house in the mountain that has ended up being a small farm for chickens, mini goats, deers, squirrels... she beats both of us!

  10. Hey you guys, thank you so much for your comments! I admit, I like the way this one turned out too. It seems like some of my better work is when I am totally in love with the object!
