The Seed Bank
A new store opened recently in Petaluma, California. After remodeling an old vintage bank -- see the marble everywhere? -- it is now an heirloom seed company. You want some tomato seeds? How about choosing from the 200 varieties available. Ditto for everything else.
So that's where I entertained myself for an hour this morning. I had to drive over to Petaluma anyway to pick up my daughter's insulin at our HMO branch, so I made an outing of it and browsed amongst the seed packets. I don't need another hobby/addiction -- but revisiting three or four times a year seems like a fun thing to do.
Specifically today I wanted to find seeds that I could plant alongside the chicken run, vine-things that would cover over the chicken wire and bloom even if the hens pecked at the leaves. I was asking a lot.
In the end I came home with more sunflower seeds (I know, that's not a vine), nasturtiums, no morning glories (the seed packet said they are poisonous), some pole beans that I didn't need but which looked colorful and interesting and some other things that I hope will grow even at this late date. Strawberries are sold from the fields locally until mid-November so I think everything I got will still make it although it may be a bit of a stretch for some.
If you're properly in awe, they have an online business as well. You can get more information HERE. Be prepared to be impressed!
