On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

The noble volunteer

One of the many things I really appreciate about our national character is that Americans like to volunteer. I recall hearing of a study last year in which 3/4 of the nation's adults had some sort of volunteer activity that they were actively involved in.

Take this sunflower, for example. It wasn't involved in last year's research. It wasn't even born yet.

Last year I planted ONE sunflower seed and I got ONE awesome sunflower!

This year I planted exactly one sunflower seed, but I have THREE growing - two are a few feet from last year's original.

Now that's volunteerism at it's best, someone who will just make themselves at home in my garden, plant their feet deeply in the soil and start reaching for the sky.
