On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Perpetual motion machines

I've never drawn a chicken in my life so wasn't exactly sure what to expect if I tried.

I didn't expect the chicks to stand still and pose, but I thought they'd be steadier than trying to draw a mosquito! Not so!

The chickens were calm as chickens go, not disturbed by my presence. They were chirping, but not that distressful peeping that means they're too cold or too hot or too upset, just discussing something among themselves. They'd peck at the food, they'd sip a little water, bump into each other and flutter their wings.

I was drawing as fast as I could and adding color as I went. I gave up trying to get full bodies and then I gave up even getting full heads!

So the question is, How many chickens will I need to draw before I know how to draw a chicken? I'm guessing about 1000.....

  1. I just spent some wonderful time enjoying your blog, your chickens and your draw your food diet. So much there to feast on (and much I could relate to)! Did you see the post on my blog about my best friend, another Barbara, and her baby chicks and my trying to draw them? It was fun seeing so much of the same on your blog.
