On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Out for tea

Out for a short walk this evening, we stopped for tea in a shop featuring live music - actually a friend of ours who loves to sing. I haven't had much experience drawing people but, while I was there, I did my best. We had a nice time and saw others we know -- one of the joys of small town life!

Sometimes I have to step back and remind myself why I do this, why do I keep drawing when I have no obvious talent and such limited skill.

All I want is to be able to chronicle my life in words and pictures, more or less equally.  For decades I maintained written journals but, after seeing some beautiful art journals, I wanted more.  But the basic goal hasn't changed -- I want to journal and I want to be able to draw what I see as well as write about it.  That's the whole point!

  1. I think that anyone can learn to draw and that our society tends to categorize people into Those With Talent and Those Without. I think the truth is that everyone can improve with practice, and that is what you are doing!

I wish someone had taught me this in my 20's...I gave up...thought I didn't "have it."

I like your sketches, and I think that some of us are drawn to keep growing and learning through life...I respect that you are not taking the easy route. And, journals with words AND pictures are SOoooo special.

I look forward to seeing more of your work.

    Best,
    Kim

Please don't think that you lack talent and skill - I love these tea shop sketches. And also admire you for doing what I have so far failed to achieve - drawing in public! Looking forward to seeing more.

  3. Now don't get me started! You need to go as far back as you can and see how incredibly far you have come! We see it and I wish you could, too!
    Following your journey with joy,
    Lisa
