On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Moving through time

I must be getting old. I was watching a documentary about Franklin Roosevelt on PBS a few nights ago. I started ticking off on my fingers who came next, and next and next and realized that I have already lived through 12 U.S. Presidential terms of office with another one to begin just months away. I had no idea.

YOU ARE INVITED to follow my blog! Go ahead, make my day and add yourself by clicking on the invitation. It's posted a bit below the animal photos on the right side. Oh, I will be proud...I can feel my head expanding already. Thank you so much!

In the meantime, here are a couple journal pages that I've finished. A couple weeks ago, when I was teaching the Juvenile Hall boys how to make simple accordian sketchbooks, I prefaced the project by asking, "Why would anyone want to make one?" Several good ideas popped up about personal space and journaling, but one young man mentioned food. "Interesting that you would say that," I said, "a couple hours ago I was sitting in McDonald's and, while I was waiting for my coffee to cool, I drew my hamburger!" So I showed them this page:

By the way, did you know that "seniors" can buy McDonald's coffee for 50¢? I just KNEW I'd find an advantage to old age if I just waited long enough!

This morning I took my three black labrador retrievers out on a playdate with four of their friends. While they were running and tugging ropes I finished a page of fig leaves that I had started earlier. Fig leaves are fun to draw because their shapes are so intriguing. I'm trying to learn how to darken certain parts so the leaves tuck down in places. I'm also learning how to use background color to make the main subjects pop out. So much to learn!

  4. Okay, let your head swell a little. I'm following! lol.
That's really neat that you could show the boys people really do journal their food. I wonder what made him think that though.

I like your fig leaves. I haven't yet tried to paint. Guess I am going to have to bite the bullet at some point and just do it. Ah, you are a braver soul than I.
