On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

The beckoning weekend

You're going to be so bored if I don't get it together and draw or paint something new! I put a large sketchbook on the lamp table where I sit when I watch TV -- or just sit -- and, since there are always dogs hovering, I have no excuse to not draw them, at least. I wonder how many thousands of pages I'll have to sketch before one of them looks real.

In the meantime, I called in my credit card number so my school fees are paid, I'm on the class roster, and am expected to show up on Monday evening for the first class of the semester. On Sunday Steve and I are driving around the campus; neither of us has ever seen it even though, according to Google Maps, it's only eleven miles away. But it's "Mom's new school" and that's the way we're looking at it.

We celebrated my birthday last night by dining out -- even that phrase, "dining out," sounds elegant. We stay at home a lot -- you know, like old fogey stay-at-homes, and like it that way. But it was fun to have a pleasant evening away. Tonight we sat up and watched "The Bucket List," not a great movie but something to think about all the same. When you're living with cancer you start thinking about a lot of things differently...

I like the dog's eyes... you can tell you care deeply about them the way they are drawn.

  2. I keep thinking the same thing about faces--how many times do I have to draw someone before it looks like that person? Your dogs look like dogs; keep going. My faces look mostly human, so I'll keep going, too. School starts tomorrow for me, too. Fun classes. Enjoy.

  3. Barbara, I read your blog...congratulations on your remission and your new lease on life. Happy Birthday...64 ... remember that is the new "40s".. I am 61 and have never been so happy in my life...my children are raised, happy (I assume) and successful, I am retired after 30 years (and now have a part time job that I love with no stress...well very little)...plus now is the time that you can do all those "someday" things that you never had time to do when you were younger and so busy! Have a wonderful birthday weekend and keep drawing. I think drawing is like anything you learn...it just takes practice, practice!
