On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Another way to journal

It's so hazy and smoky here in Northern California that I don't know whether to open the doors and windows to let smoke out or keep everything closed up so no more comes in. There are over 400 fires throughout the State right now and several are relatively near. But the temperature is more than 20 degrees cooler than last week, so let's be grateful for that.

Several months ago I bought the DVD, Beginning Watercolor Journaling, by Christina Lopp and Gay Kraeger, but I wasn't brave enough to try their process until I viewed the video again this week.

They cover it all -- color mixing, lettering, adding words, using a view finder, quick pages, larger views, making a simple journal (including the right way to tear the watercolor paper), contour drawing and quite a lot more. I didn't realize how packed it was until the second time I watched.

They also have a wonderful website, www.watercolorjournaling.com, where you can find the DVD and see lots of finished pages.

This is a completely new style of journaling for me. I like it and will be making more pages in the future. And now I want to figure out how I can attend one of their workshops in person.

  4. I'll check out that DVD. I enjoy my watercolor pencils but I want to do real watercolor and don't quite know how to jump in and use them. This sounds like just the ticket! Thanks for the review - it really helps since I see what you do and try and so I know where you are coming from when you give a review.

Your picture is wonderful too. If that's what the DVD can help me do, I gotta have it!

  5. By the way, how are the kids doing where you volunteer at juvie? Do you work with them over the summer?

My daughter had her kids and some neighbor kids make the books with the glued binding. They turned out well according to one of my granddaughters and they are keeping their poetry in them. Did you ever end up making books with your kids you volunteer with?
