On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Half done

I finished my bits and pieces of Van Gogh's bedroom and made so many mistakes that I'm hoping the actual copy will be much better. It's been a good project for me so far because the lines are easy to follow and there is a simplicity overall that I find appealing.

The boys at Juvenile Hall were underwhelmed when I asked them to draw their bedrooms at home, or their preferred rooms or their copies of Van Gogh's bedroom. All of the options were represented but several chose to add a fourth choice and drew their cells. I held up my sketchbook/journal and showed them the part I had completed at that time. One boy asked to see it close up -- and when I was back at his table a few minutes later he was busy reading my entire journal! For all that, several thanked me again for being there so I guess they enjoyed the break in the week in spite of themselves.

  1. Reading your journal? That's kids for you! Perhaps their cells are more bedrooms than some of them have at home. My daughter went around doing Santa wishes one year and bunkbeds were one of the things she gave to an extended family in a two bedroom apartment. It wasn't the only one she visited that Christmas where there weren't enough beds for everyone much less bedrooms!
