Everyday Matters Challenge #28 Draw an appliance
I haven't tried any EDM challenges recently and now I see that as a mistake. This evening I drew my hair dryer, figuring that qualifies as an appliance, at least a small one. I used hard pastels because I'm still working on my values homework for the pastel class. Some day I'd like to draw the same hair dryer using color and see if it really is easier that way. Being limited to black, gray and white seemed difficult -- but then, anything I draw seems difficult to me!
Beyond that it was a lazy quiet Saturday in northern California, for which I am grateful. I gave one of the dogs a bath -- with three dogs there is always one who needs a bath. I watched "My Left Foot" on DVD, a film I had missed when it was popular. I didn't realize it was about drawing too. Now I feel even less accomplished and more stupid -- Christy Brown was so challenged and can draw so much better than I ever will! I'm homeschooling my special needs daughter, an adult, and we had a nice lesson. As I said, a quiet day in northern California.....
Barbara, you need to quiet your inner critic. There's not a thing wrong with your drawing. Drawing it b&w and gray will help you to see values and understand how shadows and highlights work. Then you can incorporate that knowledge into your color work. You're doing fine, so don't be so hard on yourself. I saw that movie, too, years ago! I can't remember much, but do know I really enjoyed it. Your hairdryer is really well done. Don't compare yourself to others because that will sabotage you every time. Art is always a learning experience so we are all students. There will come a day when you look back at the hairdryer and think how far you have come.
