On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

EDM Challenge #121 - Draw a coin

This week's Every Day Matters challenge was to draw a coin. For reasons I don't understand, I found it excruciatingly difficult. I started off by sketching several coins from various countries and then decided to focus on the US Lincoln penny. I drew in pencil and then went over it with a fineline artist's drawing pen. Every step of the project was hard. Finally, I photocopied a penny at a 300% enlargement so I could see more detail but that really didn't help me a whole lot. The project did answer one question however: I now know why Abraham Lincoln didn't pick me to be his official White House portrait artist!

  1. Don't be so hard on yourself as it's all a part of the learning process. I don't think you've done too bad a job at all. :)

  2. Again don't be too harsh - a coin is so small, not the best place to start drawing heads and it is all part of improving...as I well know. Keep going you're doing just fine.

I agree with Serena and Sarah. Part of the problem is the texture of the coin and the size. It's technically a great sketch. It looks like a coin and we can tell that it is. You're doing fine! Baby steps. Progress, not perfection. Do it again in a year and you will be astonished at your progress. Keep up the great work.
