On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Wednesday in May

Raquel

It took me forever to get my day going; I'm still having lots of energy lags.  But I did run some errands, made it to lunch with friends and to my cancer support group.   This evening Steve and I walked the dogs for a mile (after watching two episodes of Doc Martin, our current favorite).

I also sent an email message to my oncologist to thank him for keeping me alive long enough to see my son's graduation.  Law school wasn't on the radar when I was diagnosed in 2002 so it's a surprise to me even now to realize I was there and how his goals have developed.  Sometimes I think it's pure nosiness that keeps me alive - and then what happened, and after that what came next?  I just don't want to miss out on any of the news!

  1. Barbara, I'm so glad you were able to see your son's graduation - what a thrill it must have been!

Who really knows what life has in store for us - every day a mystery and a path to walk. May you always walk in beauty and grace.

Watch out - Doc Martin is highly addictive!

  2. I beet your son thought it was wonderful you were around for his graduation too! My son-in-law is going to law school now. It's been a lifelong dream and he seems to be doing well. When does your son take the bar exam?

  3. Hi Elizabeth -- We watched 3 episodes of Doc Martin tonight so you are absolutely correct!

Hi Timaree -- He's waiting until February because his boss, the mayor of Honolulu, has an election this fall and the office will be busy.
