On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Lots of Candles, Plenty of CakeLots of Candles, Plenty of Cake by Anna Quindlen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Anna Quindlen is one of my favorite authors so when I learned that LOTS OF CANDLES, PLENTY OF CAKE had been released I immediately downloaded it onto my Kindle. I was not disappointed. I enjoy memoir and I enjoy women's thoughtful reflections on their lives. I like the details of small pleasures that matter to this author and I once made a list of my own. (Once I reached 100 it seemed that just about everything pleased me.) There is no 100-long list in this book, but frequently the author makes a short list of what really matters in various situations. (Elizabeth Berg, another favorite, frequently includes short lists in her novels too.) She discusses aging, especially her own and women's aging in general; she talks about what she values and, just I mentioned as recently as yesterday, she wants to know the next part of life's story. I called it my own nosiness, she dignifies it as curiosity.

I know I will reread this book, probably once a year or so. It's on my Kindle for keeps.

  1. I've never read any of her books. It sounds interesting.
