On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

What's flying around now?

Some of the local schools were closed yesterday, I'm not sure why. For Demi, the Library Dog, there were fewer kids coming in to read to her. I used the time to draw her while we waited for customers. She posed well so I got further than I typically do.

The nuclear catastrophe in the making is upsetting, to say the least. It isn't simply the drift onto humans that worries me. That puts individuals at risk, but my concern is more far reaching than that. Radiation eventually gets into the food supply, settling on plants which are eaten by humans or by cattle or other grazing animals and they are eaten. And so it goes. Yes, radioactive material dissipates, but that's what makes it worse. This is scary stuff.

  1. Wonderful sketch, Barbara. It has been horrible watching everything going on in Japan right now, hasn't it. I feel so bad for them!

  2. Demi looks cute and seems to be wondering where all her friends are.

What surprised me about Chernobyl was that years later when scietists were looking at ground zero there, they found the wildlife and plantlife thriving. They were surprised. It gives me hope.

  3. I should probably limit my CNN time. It's not a situation I can fix and watching too much doesn't keep me informed, it just depresses.

Timaree --But the cancer rates have soared in that area for years. I'm not as hopeful as you are.
