On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Follow the rules

Those of us who maintain art journals also uphold a set of rules, but these are often unrecognized. My rules include such things as completing the pages in order vs. opening the book at random; using both sides of the page vs. drawing only on the right hand side; staying on one page vs. drawing over the gutter (difficult with spiral-bound books, easy with stitched signatures) and never tearing out unhappy results.

That last one doesn't mean I don't have lots and lots of failed pages and it doesn't mean I can stand the sight of them. So my next rule is: Paste a sheet of paper over the disgusting outcome and begin again or, as I did in this case, paste a sheet of colored paper and glue on all the little portrait sketches I made during the sermon this morning. Short sermon = few sketches, longer words = more developed pieces. That's the rule.

  1. I love the sketches - so spontaneous, and I love your rules ... especially the one about covering up the stuff you don't like! lol nancy

  3. We all have rules, don't we? In April, Fake Journal Month, we get to break them all because, after all, it isn't really our journal! Or, as Roz Stendahl says, "Life is short, why live only one!"
