Saying goodbye
If midlife is when you stop counting how old you are and start figuring how many years you might left, the next stage of life is saying goodbye to your friends. I'm sort of in between. I hope to have many years in front of me and haven't bequeathed anything yet, but I do seem to be attending funerals more frequently. Each one is a treasured somebody who contributed to the life of our community and will be missed and remembered with fondness.
And so it was today. This wasn't a man I knew well. I'm not deeply grieving. But he was a person I liked and have known for about 20 years. He took classes I taught, he was a stable presence and was much loved by those who knew him better. My life would have been diminished had I not met him at all.
Oh I'm so sorry for your loss. My co-worker's grand father was buried today, I didn't go to the funeral because I didn't know him at all... it's a part of life that is hard to accept sometimes. I'd much rather hold a new baby and hear it coo and watch it smile. Which I did today with a young couple at McDonald's new baby... she was fussing a little, but when I talked to her she smiled.. that baby's smile made my day...and I don't even know them and will probably never see them again... touched my heart it did.
