On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Dog labor laws?

I worry about overworking poor Demi. This morning I took her to the infusion center which turned into a six-hour stint from door to door. We were both tired by the time we got home so I opted out of my watercolor class and we fell asleep.

Yesterday Demi worked the library crowd and tomorrow we'll be at Juvenile Hall for several more hours. On the other hand, there are perks. All morning nurses and other medical staff walked by with treats for Demi who was only too willing to Sit for them.

There were also moments when she was on a Release command -- really a non-command -- when she wandered the chemotherapy suite and visited her friends. She has her regulars. Every third Tuesday, for example, I'm there and so is an old guy who sits in the next chair over. He calls to Demi and pets her while he receives her treatment. This dog, I tell you, she's a canine smile machine.

  1. It is a big responsibility... making sure dog's don't over do it..because most of my dogs do not know when to quit... especially if balls are being thrown or cookies for sits and sits ups are being passed out. My brightest day in the hospital was the day the therapy dogs came to visit... so bless you for taking her for others to enjoy her doginess.
