On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

What's in YOUR bathtub?

It's official, I went and did it. Youngest Daughter and I went back to Western Farm Center this morning and came home with six baby chickens. I'll know there's a god if they all turn out to be female. (WFC will buy back any roosters, the 5% mistake possibility.)

The chicks are a bit less than one week old so they need a constant temperature of about 95ºF. I stuck them in the bathtub (dry, no water in it), turned on a space heater and hung an infrared lamp over them. There's a thermometer in the bathtub too, so I know what the temperature is down where they are.

Having never raised chickens before, every time I check on them I notice something new. They are voracious eaters. They drink like fish. They are in perpetual motion. They chirp happily. They are a delight to watch.

  2. Thank you, Suzanne. I'll be writing about chickens every day until.... uh, the cows come home? the chickens come home to roost? Well, a long time!
