While I was posting I forgot to mention a great read. This weekend I was so incredibly caught up in FIELD DAYS, by Jonah Raskin. The book is about local organic farming, so local that I have been in some of the shops mentioned and know some of the people described.
I also learned the word, "locavore," meaning one who eats locally grown produce. I intend to become one.
Jonah Raskin is a professor at Sonoma State University, my alma mater, who spent a year working alongside Mexican laborers on one small farm nearby that specializes in flowers and organic produce.
For me, this book was a page turner. As our world becomes more polluted, as I continue to deal with my own cancer, I am becoming more and more interested and concerned about my own food sources. I have been writing regularly about the Square Foot Garden project I began this spring. That's just one piece of how I'm working to change my diet into healthier food grown without added chemicals and thriving under our own sun.
"Lovacore"...great word! This week one of our local radio announcers (1233 ABC Newcastle - that's Newcastle Australia) is being a "lovacore" and reporting in on what she's eating - and drinking. (We do produce great wine!)
