On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Keeping track of myself

It was fun maintaining a visual calendar during the week. My first attempt ended up like this:

That effort inspired me to log in my Weight Watchers record keeping visually too.

I need to learn how to draw the situations I'm actually in. That still seems like a huge jump for me but I have started to at least try - with absolutely no success! Here is a little stream in an urban park. I was sitting on a bench when I made the basic outline and then finished it at home later.

I was so frustrated that I went back to Zentangling the next day and added one to my Magic Carpet series.

Later that same morning the kids in detention at Juvenile Hall were working in acrylic again so I tried to also. It turned into a doodle of sorts.

I gave up and just drew a simple tulip.

This morning I shampooed the living room rug at home. After it was dry I sat in my clean, fresh room and drew birds from photo references.

Tomorrow our grandchildren are coming over to help us celebrate Father's Day. It will be fun!

  3. Landscapes are humbling, aren't they! Don't get down. I remember my first one. Result: wanted to find another hobby. Just needed more manageable views to draw. With as busy as landscapes are, you may need more time sketching the scene and not just get the basic outline there and finish at home. You'll get there.
