On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

End of a gorgeous weekend

Northern California couldn't have been more lovely than it was this weekend, but I understand that normal heat will return midweek. I have so enjoyed temperatures about 70º for days on end.

I spent four hours with miscreants at Juvenile Hall on Friday morning. They are at their best when there's structure and consequences and I usually enjoy my time there. They were set up for an acrylic project.

And because acrylics stick to clothes permanently, they each wore green jumpsuits over their regular clothes.

Back home for the weekend, I had time to finish my re-read of Danny Gregory's book, AN ILLUSTRATED LIFE. I read it last fall when it first came out and enjoyed it just as much the second time .. and know I'll probably make reading it an annual event. I truly enjoy peeking into other people's sketchbooks and noticing how they use them.

In my own pages I was struggling to construct your basic stick figures. I have no idea why they are so difficult for me. I have to arrange my own body in the pose I'm imagining and then draw the lines of my own bones -- and even then I sometimes miss.

I gave up on that and then drew lines, lots and lots of lines. This was an exercise in one of Bert Dodson's books and was fascinating to work on. I am interested in patterns and repetition anyway and this fits right in.

And now, wind down the weekend and start all over again!

  1. What a nice feeling to actually be caught up. I like your stick figures they are very nice. Your line drawings came out great. I liked how they followed the flow of the fabric.
