On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

If you can zentangle a cow, you can zentangle anything

I just finished a super great read, THE MIDDLE PLACE, by Kelly Corrigan. This is a cancer book, through and through. But it's not a depressing or hopeless memoir, quite the opposite.

First Kelly is diagnosed at 37, then her beloved father is in his 70's. The history of the entire family, a tight-knit Irish-American family, is interspersed with treatment specifics.

We meet Kelly's brothers, her mom and various other relatives. We follow her from birth through college, her travels to faraway places. We meet her boyfriends, her husband, her kids. So well written, so poignant and funny, it's one of those you-can't-put-it-down types, meaning that I stayed up later than I intended for several nights until I finally got to the last word.

In my drawing class we're beginning to look at abstracts. I chose this cow which I drew in black ink and then zentangled. There's a third part that I'm still working on. In fact, I'm still deciding on the background for these parts too.

You know, when I was a kid growing up, it never occurred to me that I'd spend my senior years drawing the portrait of a cow!
