On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Off the deep end

If this image looks out of character for my blog, you're right. Never have I made imaginative drawings, not since I was about four years old that is. But I have a favorite web site http://344design.typepad.com/344_loves_you/ where the author teaches his method of monster construction -- beginning from a blob of blown black ink -- and was enticed into trying. So fun! My four year old self suddenly came alive again, a part of myself I haven't seen in well, decades.

This was so much fun, in fact, I know I'm going to draw more monsters. I'm also trying to figure out how I can bring the concept to my girls' therapy group in Juvenile Hall so the kids can meet up with their personal monsters and make some decisions what to do about them.

Juvie kids usually have concerns with drug and alcohol addiction, gangs, fighting and lack of emotional awareness and control. They are typically not insightful so sitting around in a traditional therapy circle simply doesn't work for them; therefore I almost always have a starting activity to get them focused. I think they would enjoy this one.
