On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Living in shades of gray

For three class sessions we've been learning how to use value scales in our drawings. One day there was an elaborate display of ceramic vases, mugs, metal pieces and various other black-white-gray objects. Our task was to choose one portion of the display and draw it using only pencils but showing different parts of the gray scale.

On another day Teacher arrived pushing a large green wheelbarrow with a lighter green exercise ball. Both objects were set on a green tarp. The assignment was to draw the three elements showing three different greens with our black pencils. I gave up on the tarp because I don't know how to draw fabric folds - I think that comes next week.

Today I worked on an extra credit assignment. We had the option of drawing two objects of different colors, again, using only pencil. I had taken Demi to the dog park this afternoon and brought a camera so I could take several doggy action shots. I hope to use the photos in other drawings too since I haven't yet learned how to draw when the subject is in motion. And these dogs were in fast motion! But here I have three objects in three different "colors."
