On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Lose a few

I'm not pleased with this set of dog sketches but I'm being faithful to the rigor of drawing every day, no matter what. I used to enjoy drawing Beulie, the yellow labrador retriever we raised for Canine Companions for Independence. (See http://beautifulbeulie.blogspot.com if you want to know her story.) But I'm finding black dogs much more difficult and I don't know why. (sigh)

The stretch from Thursday's class to Tuesday's seems very long. I've been ready to get back to campus all weekend. Tomorrow, finally....

I agree with Ginny. And, animals are really hard to draw.

  3. Your dog sketches are wonderful! Do not be so hard on yourself. it is the Shadows defeating your Graphite. Think of some erasures.

  4. They are difficult because they are all black. I've tried taking photos of my black dog and it's hard to get a good photo because of all the black. On a light dog their eyes show up along with shadows so it's easy to see their shape and expression but a dark dog with dark eyes and dark (are they even there) shadows it is very difficult.

Thank you for your encouragement and suggestions. I am so glad I am in a semester-long drawing class so I can get some help when we cover some of the topics that I find difficult.
