Let's hear it for the underbird
You know those old ladies who sit on park benches in big cities and feed the pigeons? The ones that the police sometimes chastise because pigeon feeding is illegal, spreads disease and unsightly white dumps on government buildings? Well, if I was in my 70s and living in an urban area I would probably be one of those women. Not homeless or a bag lady, nothing that extreme, just an insatiable pigeon lover.
So today, while I was waiting for another storm to move into our area, I began a divided piece with five sections, each devoted to some pigeon or aspect of pigeon life. Here's the first one, drawn in ink and painted with both watercolor pencils and watercolor.
This made me smile and wish you were here to see the two big wood pigeons, the size of ducks, (well, almost) that are currently devouring the food I put out for the birds!
ReplyDeleteI know pigeons are birds too but these are very greedy and leave nothing for the other birds. It is a good thing that I also have bird food set out in places that the pigeons cannot reach!

I think this is a great idea. Pigeons according to an article I once read, should be our national bird. They are survivors and adapters more than most - like people they will fit into their environment rather than simply perish because they can't adapt quickly enough. We love doves which are really pigeons. Oh, yeah, they make a mess - so hire some homeless to clean up after them for a bed and dinner. Sounds like a win-win to me.
ReplyDeleteI love your painting - and I am a fellow pigeon lover - I think they get an unfairly bad press. They are very intelligent and were very useful in the war for carrying messages.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet post and great art. I'm not a big bird fan but feed the pigeons if you wanna I say. I can't believe that the police would say anything like that to little old ladies! Come to think of it.....Yeah I can.
