On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Mom's new school

When I returned from my first mixed media class last night I didn't know if I was underwhelmed or just massively confused. Twenty-four hours later I'm rethinking it all -- I now say it was massive confusion which has since abated. We're two students short for the class to fly but I made an announcement during my watercolor class and a couple women sounded like they might sign up.

I expect to love this class and I expect enough people to register. We're starting off with collage, not one of my strengths but something I've done. There will be lectures and demonstrations on Mondays and we'll have studio time on Wednesdays, that's to be the usual schedule. Labor Day, of course, will disrupt it right from the get-go, but there is a structure in place.

So I shopped for my new art supplies which didn't take long because I own at least of ten of everything ever made. But there's always room for more!

In my watercolor class today there was a 2+ hour lecture/demonstration by a Golden acrylic representative. That fit in well with my new class in mixed media since acrylics are often used as part of the mix. It also gave me an excuse to upgrade my shopping.... do you sense a theme here? I only shop for books and art supplies, nothing else.

During the demonstration I sat quietly out of the speaker's direct view and drew my sleeping Demi.

  1. I loved your blog...especially the part about shopping for supplies...are we all made out of the same mold? I do the same thing...I always thought maybe I was obsessive compulsive! I love school supplies--this time of year. Maybe that is why i was a teacher for 30 years...really I loved the students/teaching, but I also liked the neat supplies in August. Keep up the great work. Have fun doing collage...one of my favorites!

  5. Good luck from all your blog "regulars" on the class. And keep drawing no matter whether the class is collage or whatever.

  6. Thank you all so much. I didn't expect it to be a major deal to switch from painting Beulie (a yellow lab) to learning how to paint Demi, the black lab in the pictures. The body structure and postions are similar, the texture of the fur is almost the same, it's just the coloring that is throwing me off. But... I can remember how awful my early paintings were of Beulie and that I did improve, that memory gives me hope!

  7. I thought like Kunstrxns, this is your best sketch of patiently waiting Demi yet.

Hope you get your two more people especially now that you've bought the new supplies!
