From paint to collage
One of the county high schools has recently created a stricter dress code, widely publicized in local newspapers. I photocopied one of the news stories and brought it in to the girls at Juvenile Hall for discussion. Later I gave the girls a stack of scrapbooking papers and some templates, scissors and glue sticks and asked them to clothe the drawn figure I gave them with what they believed was appropriate for school and would not get them into trouble. It was a fun project and they enjoyed it -- but I enjoyed the aftermath even more.
The aftermath: With that on my mind I went to session 2 of my new mixed media class. We will be spending about two weeks on collage and were given the assignments for that media. The instructor asked us to create a minimum of three collages with varying elements -- 1) a collage with recognizeable images 2) an abstract collage 3) a collage (#1 or #2) with handmade elements added.
I completed the third one when I depicted a group of ancient ladies contemplating Victorian school girls. The words around the ladies say, "The girls at Juvie were underwhelmed by their school's new dress code."
very nicely done and clever!
