On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

Stuck on onions

It was 101 degrees here yesterday and hotter today. So I've been doing what Lionel Hardcastle would say, "practicing the art of doing very little, slowly."

You don't recognize the name? He's a main character on As Time Goes By, a favorite PBS British sit-com from the '90s and still shown locally a couple times a week.

Brix got a foxtail caught in his tonsils, actually his left tonsil, and hacked and coughed and vomited all one night earlier in the week. We were in the vet's office when they opened to get the diagnosis and removal of the beastie. He's fine now and we're being a lot more careful about exposure to high grasses.

I continued my onion project by redrawing the same basic shape but using acrylic paint in the watercolor technique on one and colored pencil on the other. I'm learning a lot about acrylic this summer in my watercolor class, one idea being that it can be thinned just like watercolor and layered and applied similarly.

I don't know anything about layering with colored pencil so I just drew and pretended. All three onions (these and last week's) were layered with only two colors. I really enjoy working that way, with very little, and am gradually learning that less can, once again, be more.

  2. Wow. These are really good Barbara. Is there a place in your kitchen to hang your onion series? That would be a super decoration.

We've been over 100 each day lately too. The humidity is so low I don't even try to paint anymore - it just dries on the brush before I can get it laid down.

Poor Brix, like he doesn't have enough trouble already. I had a poodle get one of those down his ear. The vet said it went straight to his ear drum with the way those things go in one direction. I really watch out for the dogs now when that grass is tall.
