On 01.02.02, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Too late for surgery, I had chemotherapy, which failed. In May the chemotherapy was changed and I was soon in remission which was celebrated and welcome and lasted nine years - until October 2011. There was progression in 2011 so more treatment was indicated and I am now back in partial remission. But I'm not only a cancer patient - I also enjoy my family, walk my dogs and am learning to draw and paint. Life is good!

I wish I could draw

I went to a bird journaling and drawing workshop this morning, an exercise in frustration for me. My classmates were mostly experienced birders so, when we went out for the two hour field exercise, they were all chirping, "Oh there's a whatever" and beginning their drawings. I was left squinting into the sun whining, "Where, where?"

The truth is, I did learn a lot. It was a well organized class with a caring instructor and we left with great handouts and new art materials. I made a list of all the birds the others saw and have begun researching on the 'Net. Now I know some of the birds that visit that park, I can learn their names and little faces, and begin sighting them on my own. It's not that I'm hoping to become an expert birder, but I would like to be able to identify visitors to my own back yard. So far all I've known are goldfinches and the occasional jay, robin and hummingbird.

This evening I tried to redeem myself by making a pencil drawing of two tangerines. Hah! They so didn't look like tangerines that I just gave up and ate them. End of story.
